Plant Watering Bulbs – What Type Should You Buy?

Plant Watering Bulbs - the Cheaper Plastic Version that Won't Break if You Drop It

Do you want a way to water your spider plants without having to constantly monitor their soil? Plant watering bulbs can provide the perfect solution.

For instance do you travel frequently or forget to feed your houseplants. These low-maintenance irrigation globes can essentially “babysit” your plants for you and keep them healthy.

A Problem with Self-Watering Globes…

Initially, I did not like these self-watering globes because I had only seen ones made of glass.

You’d have to handle them very delicately, and I was always worried that I would break them.

The Simple Solution:

However, now you can buy these watering globes in a durable transparent PVC. In fact, you can easily mistake them for the more expensive glass version. The design looks the same.

Not only can these automatic self-watering globes save you a bunch of money (you can get about 2 for the price of 1 glass globe), but they will probably last longer too. =) Not to mention, they provide a lot more durability should you choose to use them outdoors.

I also like these cheaper bulbs because you can get them in clear transparent plastic. In other words, you don’t have to get them in bright flashy colors that stand out from your plants.

2 More Reasons Why These Plastic Self-Watering Bulbs are Better:

The transparency provides a couple of cool benefits.

First of all, the clear material allows this automatic watering system to easily hide underneath the foliage. People might never know it’s there.

Second, the clear design enables you to view the watering level. Therefore, you can tell when you need to refill the unit without even removing it from the soil. Talk about low maintenance. =)

I also like this low-maintenance self-watering system because it works well for virtually any potted plant. They are a simple device, yet effective and efficient.

The bulb’s stem will only disperse the amount of water that the soil needs. Therefore, if the plant is thirsty, the globe delivers more water. On the other hand, if you have an arid or drought-tolerant variety, you won’t have to replenish the bulb as often.

Tips on Filling Your Water Globe and How Often to Refill It:

Adjust the insertion depth according to the size of the flower pot. Plus, if you want the globe to remain hidden, you can push the waterer lower underneath the foliage.

On the other hand, you may want to encourage more frequent irrigation. In this case, I’d plant the stem of the watering bulb at a shallower depth in the soil.

In addition, you can insert two watering bulbs into one pot if you have a very thirsty plant.
