How to Start Growing Spider Plants:

These easy-going houseplants grow well and look impressive in hanging planters. Plus, spider plant hanging pots allow for more ventilation and light when elevated. We’ve listed 4 simple steps below on how to get started…

1. Where to Buy a Spider Plant:

3 Spider Plant Varieties

If you want to grow spider plants at home, we can help you set started. First, buy a starter plant at your local nursery online. You can also buy them in 3-plant packs and save money.

Keep in mind that these low-maintenance plants also come in different varieties, mainly Green, Variegated and Curly. You can read about the different types of spider plants here.

2. Choose the Best Location for Your Spider Plants:

Spider plants can be easy to grow due to their forgiving nature. They can thrive indoors or outside in a moderate climate as long as they get bright indirect light.

That said, they can do well in shady locations as well as under artificial light. However, you want to keep them away from direct sunlight. You can more tips for spider plant care here.

3. Prevent Leaves from Turning Brown:

How to Fix Spider Plant Brown Tips

The biggest issue that many gardeners run across is brown leaf tips on their spider plants. As you’d expect, this can be caused by dry soil or not enough water.

In addition, mineral build-up or excess fertilizer can result in leaf tips turning brown. However, I have found an easy way to solve this problem: use self watering planters.

4. Propagate Baby Spider Plants:

As your spider plant grows and develops more roots, it will become crowed in its flower pot. At this point, it will send out off-shoots, or spider plant babies.

Over a few weeks, these miniature spider plants will start to develop roots. This is when I clip them off of the “Mother” plant and stick the roots in water for about a week.

The roots will continue to grow and increase in size. When roots reach approximately 1 inch in length, I stick them in soil. See more on how to propagate spider plants.
